Quick thoughts through Week 4 of the NFL season

by John Wilmoth on September 29, 2008

Kurt Warner’s ball protection is appalling. When the timing and protection is there, he is as good as anyone. But it wasn’t there Sunday and he threw three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and lost three fumbles. Sure Warner threw for 472 yards – primarily because Arizona trailed 34-0 at halftime – but Matt Leinart’s growth is being reverted with each game Warner gets the nod.

Drew Brees and Jay Cutler are both on pace for over 5,000 passing yards.

Denver’s defense got torched by Damon Huard for 33 points. It wasn’t just the defense’s fault as Cutler and the offense turned the ball over four times. The Broncos have allowed 117 points allowed in four games and won’t make it far into the playoffs when the weather gets bad and the offense stalls.

The Tennessee defense dominated again and held Adrian Peterson to 80 yards on 18 carries and has allowed a mere 46 points through four games. If I’m starting a franchise tomorrow, Jeff Fisher is my head coach. Kerry Collins is doing a great job and keeping Vince Young on the bench, but imagine if the Titans picked Cutler No. 3 in 2006 instead of Young.

The timing was right to make a move in St. Louis with Scott Linehan. A 0-4 start, 1-9 over your last 10 and 3-17 since the start of 2007 is no sign of progress. Not to mention this defense has allowed 269 points over their last seven games. This team needs a defensive-minded head coach to say the least.

The Cowboys deserved to lose that game. No Felix Jones and only eight carries for Marion Barber while Tony Romo had 47 pass attempts is a recipe for disaster. Judging by those numbers, you would think Washington had been up by four touchdowns and Dallas had to throw to get back in the game. That simply wasn’t the case as Washington’s biggest lead was 17-7 late in the second quarter. Jason Campbell’s arm and Clinton Portis’ tenacity won this one for the Redskins.
